What Exactly is the Difference Between Stage 1 & Stage 2 Tunes?

In essence, Stage 1 & 2 are just terms used to class slightly different tunings maps which achieve different objectives. Stage 1 is an introductory ECU remap which is designed to be easily installed and mapped to your vehicle's ECU with no hardware modifications installed whatsoever. This makes it a very convenient and easy starting point for most people who decide to get their vehicle tuned. Depending on your vehicle, it also provides sizeable gains in power and torque (typically 20%) as well as improved driving dynamics and turbo spool/quickened response time.

Stage 2 remaps offer even more power and torque (typically 30% from stock), however require some small hardware modification to your vehicle. The minimum requirement is only a de-cat or high-flow downpipe. An induction kit/cold air intake as an common additional modification which allows you to get the most power out of the tune by increasing airflow to the engine from the restrictive stock air intake, however is not strictly required for stage 2.

So What Should you go With?

It is recommended that you go with Stage 2 as it is better value for your money and most people later decide to upgrade to stage 2  after they get used to the extra power from stage 1, but ultimately the decision is in your hands. You may want to go all out and get the most power, or, you may just want to keep your vehicle completely stock and have some extra performance gains to play around with.

Key Differences Between Stage 1 & Stage 2

Stage 1 Tune
  • No hardware modifications required
  • Most affordable remap for decent power gains
  • Better fuel economy
  • Improved driving dynamics and throttle response
  • Easily revert vehicle back to stock if needed
Stage 2 Tune
  • More power can be made with a stage 2 remap
  • Requires the minimum of a high-flow or de-cat downpipe
  • Greatly Improved driving dynamics with better enhanced throttle response
